With her father recently dead, Veronica's intimate narrative tells how she is sent to stay with her wealthy cousins, Caroline and Fiona, who live in Newcastle, and how she met her own distant cousin, Sebastian, on the train going north. With Caroline, Fiona and Sebastian - who intends to be a musician, Veronica's year is full of escapades, squabbles and hard work. Allowed to take lessons, she is finally seen in a performance and promised an audition. The climax is an exciting race to get to London in time for the show.
